Service: Club Ultima Membership

Getting a Club Ultima Membership is the reason why we ended up staying in Crown Regency Hotel and Towers Cebu. But before I go on, let me make one thing clear: this is not about Crown Regency Hotels, although Club Ultima is an offshoot of this hotel chain. This is about Club Ultima and why we decided to back out less than a month after we signed up and purchased a club membership.

For our trip to Cebu, I was initially planning to stay in a hotel near Ayala Center and in fact, we've already booked a room in Wellcome Hotel. But my husband received an invitation to attend a timeshare presentation in exchange for a free 3D/2N Crown Regency accommodation voucher (which we were told was worth Php24,000. I have the text message to prove it). We, wanting to save a few bucks, thought a free accommodation sounds good (though we didn't really believe it to be worth Php24,000) so we decided to accept the invitation.

We are both aware of what a timeshare presentation is, having attended a similar one in Boracay, and were prepared to say "No" to every offer that will be thrown at us, because what we're really after was just the free voucher. But during the presentation, we thought that what they were offering was a great deal and will give us a lot of savings in the long run, especially since we are planning to start traveling out of the country.

The main benefit of the membership is the yearly issuance of 7 certificates that are equivalent to 7 nights of accommodation at any of the Crown Regency Hotels nationwide (accommodation only, breakfast not included). The certificates are non-expiring and can be transferred and sold to other people. If we want to travel out of the country, we can exchange them for international accommodations via Interval International and Direct Tie-Ups subject to the following conditions:

It was a take-it-or-leave-it today-only offer, which doesn't give you time to research and think your decision through. I guess the ones who will fall prey to these types of marketing are those compulsive buyers who decide with their emotions, rather than with their brains. We are normally practical individuals, who always make sure that we'll be getting our money's worth with every big ticket item we purchase. Apparently, we're not ourselves that night. Hehe. But kidding aside, we really thought this was a good deal.

So long story short, we bit the bullet - we got a 15-year membership, which they called Trial Pack, that will cost us Php195,000; Php10,000 of which was the deposit fee to be paid impromptu and the remaining amount will be broken down into Php5,000+ monthly installments to be paid for the next 3 years; plus an annual fee of Php6,000+.

Of course, we got our 3D/2N voucher for free because we bought the membership. Otherwise, we will still need to pay Php3,000 once we use it. So had we decided to turn down their offer, we won't be getting a free "24k-worth" accommodation. Deceiving, no? Anyway, because we chose to become members, the marketing manager was kind enough to assist us with our room reservation after we told her that we want to avail the voucher for our Cebu trip (which was 2 weeks away at that time).

We went home feeling good, thinking we have saved a 2-night worth of accommodation at a 5-star hotel and we're looking forward to our future travels with less expenses. Upon reaching home, I did the one thing that I should've done before going to that Club Ultima presentation - research about Club Ultima and Crown Regency Hotels. My heart sank when I found a number of not so good reviews, mostly about Crown Regency Hotels.

But we told ourselves to wait until we see and experience staying in the hotel firsthand before making any conclusions. That fateful day came and it dawned on me that the online reviews were correct and we are about to make a very costly mistake if we will not cancel the membership immediately. We had no problems with Crown Regency Hotel and Towers Cebu (read my review here) and I find it to be one of the better hotels we've been in. But we feel that paying for a Club Ultima membership just to be able to stay in their hotels for free for 7 days every year is just not worth it.

Right after we got home from our vacation, my husband called Club Ultima to inquire about the cancellation process. He was told to send a letter via email to formalize the request, and swiftly, I wrote the letter so he can send it within the day.

These are the reasons I stated in the letter:

  1. I stayed in Crown Regency Cebu Tower last December 3-5, 2013 and found it not to be the 5-star hotel accommodation that was promised during the presentation.
  2. I checked the Crown Regency website for the average room rates and found out it to be in the range of P3000-P4000. If I multiply it to 7 (hotel vouchers I’ll get every year) and 15 (years contract term), the total amount is P315,000-P420,000. I feel that I won’t really get a big savings from the membership given that I need to pay the P195,000 membership fee and P6,000+ annual fee for 15 years.
  3. I realized that I don’t want to be tied up to a particular hotel/resort when going to a certain destination because there are many factors to consider when choosing an accommodation: proximity to tourist spots, restaurants and public transport, value for money, etc.
  4. I haven’t tried booking with Interval International but have read not so good reviews about it and I don’t want to take a risk.
Let me explain further:
Reason No. 1
During the presentation, it was practically drummed into our heads that ALL Crown Regency Hotels are classified as 5-star hotels. The hotel near Fuente Circle, Cebu City is clearly not a 5-star hotel. It's an above average hotel, probably a solid 3.5 to 4-star. But not 5-star. I checked out the reviews of the other Crown Regency Hotels (2 more in Cebu, 3 in Boracay, and 1 each in Makati and Davao) and none were categorized as 5-star either.

If we won't be getting 5-star accommodations from any of the Crown Regency Hotels, what's the point of paying for the club membership?
Reason No. 2
Our agent actually corrected us on this. He sent us a text message to tell us that Club Ultima members will get Executive Suite accommodation, which is more expensive than the Standard/Deluxe rooms and Corner suites which we used as basis for our computation. But even with an Executive Suite, which cost almost P7,000/night, I still feel that we won't get value-for-money benefits with the membership because, going to back my first reason, the 5-star rating that they give their hotels is questionable.
I'd rather stay in the cheapest room of a 5-star hotel than stay in an Executive room of a non-5-star hotel. People stay in 5-star hotels to get 5-star accommodation, 5-star amenities, 5-star service and 5-star treatment. Staying in an Executive room of a non-5-star hotel gives you just that - an Executive room and a non-5-star experience.
Reason No. 3
Like what I mentioned earlier, we were supposed to stay in a hotel that's within walking distance to Ayala Center. I chose that because most of the restaurants that we want to try are in or near Ayala or SM (which is relatively near Ayala). When we moved to Crown Regency in Fuente, we found out that cab fares to Ayala and SM cost around Php80-Php100, one way. This brings me to my point: there are a lot of factors that should go in when choosing an accommodation. Often, a strategic location could mean savings in taxi fares and travel time. Value-for-money, amenities, services and good reviews are also important to consider.
Each destination calls for a different set of criteria that suits your budget, itinerary or preference. Being tied to a particular hotel chain meant you won't likely get to choose your accommodation based on these criteria and this could potentially ruin your travel plans or blow up your travel budget.
Reason No. 4
This is pretty much explanatory. We just don't want to risk paying for something that we're not sure if will be beneficial to us, especially because Interval International will cost us $89 every year, on top of the Php6,000+ Club Ultima's annual fee.
Rude Agent
I wasn't planning to write about our Club Ultima experience because technically, we haven't really use the benefits of the membership yet. But our agent sent us a rude and sarcastic text message after learning that we backed out. I know he's not pleased because it meant that his commission will be reduced, if not called off. But that's no reason to be rude to a client who chose to cancel their membership. It is our right and he should respect that, whatever our reasons are.

Because of his indiscretion, I decided to write this review. Marketing and customer service should still go hand in hand even after the sale has been made, and even after it has been revoked. You'll never know if that client will rave or rant about you on the internet, and potentially make or break your chances of making more sales through recommendations.

UPDATE: I have received a few inquiries regarding Club Ultima membership cancellation, so here are some more details.

Line 7.1 in our contract reads: I understand that should I wish to back out of this reservation, there will be a cancellation fee of Php20,000.00 if done within 15 days of reservation. There will be no refund of all payments if cancellation is done after 15 days of reservation.

To me, this clearly means that we can cancel the membership subject to the rules in the contract. If we cancel within 15 days after we purchased the membership, we will pay a whopping P20,000 cancellation fee. But if we cancel after 15 days from the date of reservation, we don't need to pay anything anymore. The downside is, we also don't get to refund any payments we've made. At this point, we've only paid the Php10,000 reservation fee, twice as small as the other fee, so it's better if we will cancel after 15 days but before we start the monthly payment. (What I'm not sure of is if you will get a refund if you cancel within 15 days and what percentage of the total amount paid can you refund.)

We made the reservation on November 13 and requested a cancellation on December 11, more than 15 days after so we didn't have to pay the Php20,000 cancellation. At this time, they haven't charged my husband's credit card with the 1st monthly amortization fee yet so we acted quickly.

He called the Membership hotline we found at the back of the Club Ultima brochure that they gave us and inquired about the cancellation fee. If for some reason, you don't have that brochure, you can also go to their website and look for contact numbers you can call. Call, don't email.

When my husband sent the cancellation letter (to the email address that they gave), he didn't receive any confirmation so he called up again the next day to follow up. They confirmed the receipt of the email, told him that they will cancel the membership and assured him that his credit card won't be charged with anything. They didn't send any document so we just took their word for it. Good thing this time, they lived up to their promise. The membership was cancelled and we didn't pay anything other than the Php10,000 we paid during reservation.

Inisip na lang namin that the Php10,000 is for the 3D/2N (breakfast not included) that we've stayed in Crown Regency Cebu. Surely, we can find better accommodations that worth's Php5,000/night, but at least we didn't just give them Php10,000 for nothing and cut our loss to half of that amount (Deluxe Room is worth Php2,000+/night).

    2. i really thank you for this review..i was able to split the 10K in half in a promise of bigger monthly payments. I have no credit card, post dated checks are no-no, so they opted for an auto-debit.
another good thing is that they can't process my BPI atm for auto-debit. they actually advised me to open a BDO account just for that.
i was with 2 of my cousins that night of presentation and we did not get any free accommodations but FREE DINNER instead. i will just think that the 5000 payment I made is for the dinner the three of us had. (which of course is not worth it)

      thanks

  2. They led you to believe that their hotels are 5 Star rating. Now they are billing 30k reservation & 20k is non refundable without using facilities & receiving any benefits. Then they twist you to make you buy, not showing all the additional expenses to be paid. Now I understand why they are hard sellers, check out this sites below. They are like those pyramid scams. & I've visited the site Club Ultima site, I learned that I as signed to pay double the price. They are fearless because they are not under DTI, they are under SEC. accdg: to RA 739: ARTICLE 53. Chain Distribution Plans or Pyramid Sales Schemes – Chain distribution plans or pyramid sales schemes shall not be employed in the sale of consumer products

  3. We paid 100,00 on the spot and hot nothing with Club ultima. We decided to use to 7 day vouchers but they just said over the landline to landline phones that the line was chappy. We lost our 100,000 hard earned money in one night. True scam.

  4. i paid 18400php on the spot and all I got was a gift certificate (has anyone tried to use this? does the hotel really accommodate or honor the GC?)
i am still contemplating if I have to continue paying to them to get the 15 year trial pack. I have computed it to be equivalent to spending 22k per annum for a 7 day night stay in their hotels or to direct tie ups in Asian countries. Will that be worth it? Or should I back out now and just forget about my 18400?
it's hard earned money :,( any advice will be appreciated.

    1. Sorry for the late reply. Yes, we were able to use the GC, the hotel will honor it. But for me, it's not worth paying annually to keep the membership for reasons I've stated in the post.

    2. Hi, did you pay anything to redeem the gc? Like a deposit fee? And how did you booked it?

      Delete
    3. We didn't pay anything to use the GC because we purchase a trial membership. Otherwise, we need to pay P3,000 once we use the supposedly free voucher. Since we got a membership, the marketing manager helped us with the booking.

  6. i just had a talk to one of their employees, Kenneth, at El Cielito Hotel's pantry in Sta Rosa Laguna last friday, 7/25/2014. I did not know that it is a membership thing. I went there to get the 3d/2n free family package that I "won" (that is what they told me). They have asked me to bring my husband with me but i told them that i do not think that it is necessary to have someone to accompany me since i am just going to get my prize then their mgr ms.Lopez said that it is a requirement so i told her i am not going anymore since in this case that will make me ineligible to get the prize then she texted me that she will allow me to get my prize as long as i am willing to listen to their presentation for 90mins then i said i have all the time. when i went there i was with my brother. At the reception area, i was asked several questions about my basic salary, business etc... i did not provide them the exact answer bec i could not see the relevance of those info to the reason why i am there which was just to get the prize. she even asked me if i can decide on my own, then i told her that i have my own mind so why cant i and what would make me think hard abt getting the prize that they promised me. she just smiled and said that she will be back then kenneth went to us then we went to the pantry and we started talking abt stuffs specific abt my vacations in and out of the country. i already have a hint that it is somehow a scam or something that i would not like to deal with so when kenneth asked me on how i do my reservation on line, is it with a creditcard, i answered him swiftly with a no, i do it in cash. well that turned his day upside down. he handed me the free 3d/2n stay voucher then i said thank you and goodbye. i remembered that i was told no financial obligation etc was there waiting for me to claim my prize and i do not need to bring cash but when that question on how i pay my online purchases popped up and kenneth directly asked abt creditcard, boom.. i already knew what will be his next step.. good for me that i was able to talk to my parents before going to that venue and i was given a good advise on people who would take advantage of you.

    2. I just got back home from this so called free dinner, drinks and free ride i was offed. it was an epic 4 hour boiler-room sales pitch. they tried to sell it to me the 7 day a year option for P500,000 he said the deal is for today only and he hiked up the pressure when you say you think about it. tactics like this are illegal in the UK or USA. The free dinner was chicken and rice and ice tea. hardly worth having BS forced upon you for 4 hours. I actually though we were going there to view a condo for sale. but no it was timeshare in no actual physical product.

I asked him about what happens if the company goes bankrupt, he assured me that wont happen. they say they have 8,000 members. thats p11 million per month in fees they are collecting. but also what IF the corporation decides to sell some hotels in 5 or so years, then the new hotel says 'sorry mam we are a new company no longer owned by crown regency. if all hotels are sold it will leave 8,000 members high and dry. its a risky deal and a huge scam which is illegal in other countries. Need to say it was 4 hours of mine and my wife's time wasted forever. Remember there is no such thing as a free lunch, you earn it and it was really crap food anyway. in the end we gave up on the rest of the tour as its all about trying to make you part with p500,000 in cash. besides one you eat at that place and go on the rides ones who wants to do that week in week out like groundhog day. life would become very boring. Never again will i waste my time attending such BS

I just made a reservation of P10,000 for the Trial Pack with the free 3D/2N stay in Crown Regency Hotel in Davao. After reading this blog today I called my credit card and requested to dispute the transaction but unfortunately they cannot do so since I signed a document with Club Ultima. 11. Is there any way that a class action suit could be charged against Club Ultima? Shouldn't we be protected from them especially those who want to cancel? I sent them a letter less than 48 hours that I would like to cancel and wanted my PDC back since we could not fund it. They did not respond right away. They only responded 4 days after even after constant follow-up everyday.

Here is a copy of my email to them dated January 24, 2015 (Saturday) :

    Dear Sir/Madam:

In behalf of both my husband and I, I would like request that our application for membership to Club Ultima Philippines, Inc. be considered null and void. We could not afford to fund the post-dated January 31, 2015 check we issued for the membership.

Last Thursday night, January 22, 2015, we attended the product presentation at West Avenue. Even then, we informed both your sales consultant, Ms. Ara Ann Lareza, and your approving manager, Mr. Dinky G. Sanchez we are cash-strapped. But since the offer was very enticing and both of them very accommodating, we gave a post-dated check of ten thousand pesos (Php10,000.00) that same night to take advantage of the one-time initial offer.

Upon reviewing our financial situation the following day, we concluded that we will have a very difficult time funding the check and that the possibility of it bouncing is 99.9%. Hence, we are sending this request only less than 48 hours upon application to avoid penalties and legal issues from all parties concerned.

We hope for your positive response to this matter.

They responded in writing only today even after repeated follow-ups with this:

    Good day!

We apologize for the late response. Please be inform that your request for cancellation was already been processed. However, your request to pull-out your check was not approved. This is because of our policy that states "...request for check pull outs should be atleast 15 days prior to check date otherwise check will automatically be deposited.."

Though you signed for membership less than 15 days as required above, thus, this will not exempt you from our policy. It is also understood that once you signed and issue a payment, it shows your interest and willingness to join the club and adhere to the terms and conditions as stated in the Reservations Application.

Should you have any other concerns, please feel free to contact us anytime. Thank you.

  13. Hi Everyone!! I would like to raise a question regarding this Club Ultima fiasco. My wife and I got swayed by their sweet words and promises and signed up for the reservation last Feb 28. From my understanding if you cancel your reservation within 15 days you are liable to pay the Php20,000 cancellation fee and if you cancel your reservation after 15 days you would not be able to get a refund for any payments you have made. My question is this, my wife and I signed the contract last Feb28 and since we did not have any cash at hand, they agreed to auto-debit my wifes account on March 15. Realizing the mistake we have made, my wife and I decided that we will cancel our reservation on the same day that they will auto-debit my wifes account on March 15 but we've already made arrangements on having the auto-debit denied by our bank, avoiding the loss of the Php10,000 reservation fee. Since Feb28 was day 1 of the contract and March15 will technically be day 16th, will we still be liable to pay the Php20,000 cancellation fee if we cancel our reservation on March15 and they have received no payment. We badly need your help regarding this. I do not regularly check this blog site but if you have ny information that can help us, please kindly email me at juvic.abria@gmail.com

I already ready read all the reviews and my question, Is it possible to get and avail of that GC? As what the agent told us, there will be no cash involve. Maybe much better not to bring cash and never told them any account information. Please advise us. Thanks............

  16. Thank you for this information! My office mate and I also received a call informing us that we have "won" this 3D2N accommodation. Statements such as "5 star hotel" and "no cash outs needed" are repeatedly emphasized. I have been asked twice or thrice if i am 100% single.. i do not know the reason but made me skeptic.

All i can say is that nothing is for free... this is a scam.

  18. Oh my God! I am on trial as well for almost 2 yrs now. I decided to read reviews because Im currently having a problem with them. Trying to book a room at Boracay:they told me that most are fully booked which I understand because of the season so I was told that I could have my room at Crown Regency Prince. But then, after a few hours of processing via email, they responded and offered me a room at annex but with an addtl P500/night. Then again, told me that I have to make my decision within the day because rooms are running out quite fast. So I said yes.

I coulsmt relax ever since. I was researching the entire day to confirm the "fully booked" excuse which I have a bad feeling about and compared the room which I have previously chosen and the room offered to me. The latter was smaller in size but have the same amenities so I was wondering WHAT IS THE 500/NIGHT CHARGE FOR? I wouldve understand it if the room was a better but it isn't.

And from what I have read here, I definitely agree and regret that I've joined in! There were a lot of nehative feedback as well regarding their servie to members giving them cheaper rooms.

Damn it! I should have followed my instincts and not my emotions that day. Damn!

  19. Our situation is like this..
Last night (4/26/16) we went to the crown regency hotel in davao to claim what they've said which is free 3d/2n in crown regency hotel in cebu. We grabbed it because we really have plans to go there.. .After a 2-hour presentation .. and 2 cups of coffee.. we were very enticed of what they are saying.. ikaw ba naman pakita.an ng Caribbean cruise and many dream vacation stuffs. We were unto it. Unfortunately (turned to be fortunately), we dont have enough cash on that night.. We just had 5k on our hands. So after 2 minute of convincing that we were really interested but we dont have enough cash.. the manager agreed that they will take the 5k then pay the remaining 5k tonight (4/27/16). Then I found this site. My heart is pounding.. .I am so overwhelm of the negative feedback pointing to the Club Ultima. .What have we done?

I read the contract (coz I was not the one who really signed it) and in "Line 7.1 in our contract reads: I understand that should I wish to back out of this reservation, there will be a cancellation fee of Php20,000.00 if done within 15 days of reservation. There will be no refund of all payments if cancellation is done after 15 days of reservation." I've found this.

My question is what should we do to cancel the reservation? Will I email them our concern or wait for 15 days before raising it?
    Please reply. Thanks.

To shortcut the story we visited the place around 8:00pm since 10-15 mins walk lang from our place ang office nila.So pagdating dun kinausap kami ng agent nag iintroduce about sa 5star hotels daw nila sa Crown. Then interview about kung mahilig kami mag travel. So sinagot ko naman na yes since 2-3 times kaming nag tatravel mag asawa both asia and international. So the agent reply pag ganun maam /sir ang laki ng nagagastos nyo sa pag tatravel.Sabi ng asawa ko plane ticket is expensive than our accommodations.Kasi mostly di naman kmi nag stay sa mga luxury hotel. The Agent reply maam sir iintroduce ko sa inyo ang club ultima para pwde na kayong mag stay sa 5star hotels both local ang tie up hotels int'l etc. I replied, how much kasi gabie na kami di mo pa sinabi kung magkano ang membership. So she called the manager and her manager explained and told us the amount php. 499999.99 huhu(today's offer daw -june 15,2016.Then, He calculated the monthly ppayment worth php 7,7749.43 +the annual fee (that's for lifetime benefits). My husband replied its expensive for me.Could you give time to check the details etc. Then the woman's agents told to my husband its cheap sir for you sir you're japanese. My husband rreplied its not our priority now.The manager offered another (trial pack worth php 200,000.00)same benefits of 500k daw. We rejected again. Reasons. Thank you very much ms Sheng for sharing your experienced to us.

  22. Hi!

We purchased this CLub Ulitma thing and we paid 10k. We bought the membership because the agent was so aggressive. So, anyways I we planned to use the voucher for Cebu (3d2n) as a consolation or atleast to cover that 10k. Then we asked the agent and told us there is a booking fee of 3000. I saw some didn't pay because they bought the trial pack, which we did. Some didn't bought but had a gc then needs to pay 3000. I don't get it. They told us that it is complimentary.

Salamat talaga Sheng.

  29. Thank you Sheng Reviews.

    Maraming salamat talaga...Sheng Reviews

  30. Easy for you to say kasi hindi ikaw ang victim. Siguro taga Club Ultima ka no? My parents, one is a senior citizen by the way, ay victim ng Club Ultima na yan. After their cancellation, nagdidispute parin and Club Ultima with them. If you were in our shoes, I doubt kung ma-respect mo parin and company na yan. HIndi lahat ng tao may access sa internet para malaman ang problema sa company na yan. Just like my parents, hindi nila na-research bago sila nakapag-join. They were given FALSE PROMISES which is fraudulent kapag papasok ka sa isang contract. Nga pala, ang galing galing mo! Ikaw na ang magaling!
