Place: Hurom-Hurom Coldspring at Nabas, Aklan

The municipal town of Nabas is less than an hour away from the famed Boracay Island. But if ever you're in town and looking for something other than white beaches and night parties, you should try and visit Hurom-Hurom Coldspring Resort in Laserna, Nabas, Aklan.

Situated at the base of a mountain, the pools of Hurom-Hurom serve as large basins that collect cold and clear spring water. They even claimed that the water is clean and safe enough to drink. But I wasn't convinced.

The whole resort itself looked pristine and was able to maintain its natural charm despite the man-made pools and cottages. Entrance is only P20 per head, which I think will go to the preservation of the place and another P100 if you want to rent a bamboo table or P150 for umbrella cottages. I'm just not sure if they have provisions for overnight stays. But based on what I've seen, I think there is none. They have functional restrooms/changing rooms but don't expect much. There are also two sari-sari stores where you can buy basic toiletries and some snacks, if you forgot to bring some.

The water, as expected, is cold. There are three swimming areas, one swallow, one deep and one with variable depths. And interestingly, you would see the water bubbling from the bottom, a sign that there's another spring underneath the rocks. There's also a part at one side of the resort that seemed to lead into the forest but I didn't dare to wander.

For a moment, I was delighted by the gigantic trees that can be found in the area. These hundred-year-old trees have a cave-like opening that is even larger than anyone of us.

6-ft tall opening at the base of the tree.

We went in the resort at around 9 a.m. and left a little before noon. Going there is easy if you're already in Nabas. Just hire a tricycle and tell the driver to bring you to Hurom-Hurom, as the place is quite famous. There are neighboring resorts, Basang and Fern Valley, but they said that Hurom-Hurom Coldspring is the best among the three, being the first to receive water from the mountain.

Honestly, I wasn't exactly smitten by the place, having been to similar resorts in Dolores, Quezon and Liliw, Laguna and even to natural rivers and springs in Cavite. Another reason was because I was still pining for Boracay, which is a totally different experience from the seclusion and serenity that Hurom-Hurom Coldspring offers. While both are beautiful, Boracay has an addicting factor that I can't quite get over with. So if you plan on going to both, visit this first before heading to Boracay.

But I'm sure nature lovers will love Hurom-Hurom Coldspring Resort nonetheless and it is definitely a must-see place in Nabas, Aklan.

  1. I love cold bathing or swimming in cold water, but for some reason I really do not like "green" waters. :P Haha. I still prefer blue waters like the sea and pools. Just my two cents. ;)

  2. We are so lucky that there are still a group of people who preserve nature like the ones in Hurom. We need more of them around. Kasi they're really not into money making business. If they were, they would have overhauled the place and charge so much that only the foreigners and the rich will be able to enjoy (and trash in the process).

  3. @blackshirt13, haha. I prefer blue over green as well when it comes color of the water. green waters remind me of rivers that run deep and hides mysterious creatures underneath. I swear, the first time i saw bubbles coming from below, I almost believed my hubby when he said there's a crocodile down there. hehe.

@Chew On This, locals say that the resort is Korean-owned. Not sure if that is true. But judging from the entrance fee of the place, it looks like they're not after the revenue, perhaps they just want to raise enough money to maintain the resort.

    1. Hello... any idea if there's a hotel near the place or resorts perhaps?
